I see a couple of things that need to be figured out to get the core at least somewhat in better working order and ready for the next phase in development.

Matching: This is pretty fundamental to the entire experience of interacting with the MOO and it is yet quite flakey. It needs to be true advanced matching supporting ordinal+other notation (get second whatever) (get other whatever)

Matching needs to, in some way, handle things on furniture/surface items, in open containers on the ground, and in open containers in the players posession.

Sound: The sound support for the client, while advanced, powerful, and quite amazing, is still a little odd.

The client's code needs to be updated here, as well as the server sound handler, and other code needs to be added to allow rooms and areas to more easily play and layer sounds.

Also, the interface for adding/removing sounds, finding sounds, etc... needs to be improved, as well as adding tagging to sounds.

Furniture: This still has a few strange messages given at different times. I actively need help debugging this.

Stores: We had somewhat-working stores for some time, but before this can really happen, economy needs to be figured out.

food and drink: Pretty fundamental for just about any playerish/gamish thing that anyone wants to do. These work already -- can they be made better?

player account system: Can we modify read to not break things at login so we can have a very nice working one?
