Handy port forwarding trick
2008-06-29 05:31 UTC · Q (#249)
For those of you who have accounts on Prometheus (poke me if you don't have one) try this handy trick for circumventing web filters and the like:
Assuming you have open ssh installed on your windows machine issue the command:
ssh -ND 9999 username@prometheus.bounceme.net
login, then set what ever app to use socks 5 connection on port 9999 of localhost. The connection will bounce over ssh and be nice and encrypted like.
Note though that I don't believe that this encrypts dns lookups, so if you're going to thisisobviouslyadirtysexsite.com, you probably will get caught -- so ping it from another ssh session (the commands I gave you did not open an interactive session so you'll have to open another... to get the IP then go there.
If you need more help or whatever, poke me.
