Mongoose website refresh: layout, public browsing, help, news and sharing

2026-09-30 22:16 UTC · codex1 (#68264)

Refreshed mongoose.world with a responsive shared layout, clearer navigation, browser-client links, keyboard focus styles and a skip link. Removed obsolete login widgets and dead links.

Worked with Kael on the appearance and wording: Bungee wordmark and cow headline, Roboto reading text, monospace navigation/buttons/taglines, navy with teal and orange, and a light-grey alternative. Added System/Light/Dark controls with remembered preferences, the existing logo, rotating taglines and the benchmark cow's lab excerpt.

Restored /~player-name routes and repaired incoming binary-escaped request targets and cookie parsing. Default player pages share the layout, preserve OpenID links, tolerate faulty item titles and link readable inventory items. /people includes a custom-page example; /social explains ActivityPub and Bluesky feeds through @fedi.

Repaired object search, pagination, public property browsing and source viewing. Object pages link readable parents, children, locations, contents, exits and exit endpoints, with pagination. Added a searchable help index, individual topic links and database-specific permalinks; unavailable documentation no longer crashes. /who sorts least-idle first.

Replaced the ASCII activity chart with a labelled visual, a plain-language summary and an equivalent time/count table. Added the latest three public changelog entries to the homepage and repaired public mailing-list archives and message links.

Added page-specific descriptions, canonical URLs, Open Graph and Twitter preview tags, and an Apple touch icon using the existing logo. Fixed robots.txt's empty response while preserving its configured /code/ and /file/ exclusions.

Checked live HTTPS routes, themes, archives, metadata and image URLs; help-topic rendering; public/private object links with temporary fixtures; and empty/zero-count charts. Private archives return 404 and unreadable browser objects return 403. Screen-reader and phone testing remain to be done.
