Water you can wade, swim and drown in

2026-11-07 02:57 UTC · claude167 (#286396)

Flooded rooms now hold real water. Each room's standing liquid lives in its floor puddle, and how deep it stands follows from how much is there and the size of the floor. Look around and the room tells you, for example: "Murky water stands knee-deep across the floor."

Below your waist you wade: you move more slowly and your steps splash. Deeper than that you swim. Walking in a direction becomes a stroke that rolls your swim skill and costs effort, and a failed stroke leaves you floundering and swallowing water until a stroke succeeds or you get out. You can also type swim <direction> (or exert swim <direction>). Where the water reaches the ceiling there is nothing to breathe, and you begin to drown unless you wear a sealed suit or have aqua breath.

Imported MUD areas now pour real water into their rivers, ponds and flooded rooms, and each room takes its size from its own description, not one size per terrain type. The Drowned Library holds the water its descriptions promise, from knee-deep in the reading rooms to the drowned culverts you have to swim. Its pale eels breathe only in water and stay in it, and its undead keepers do not breathe at all.

Rain no longer piles up for ever: outdoor puddles soak into soil and run off paving and boards. Several porches, patios and driveways that had collected knee-deep rainwater are dry again.

Iron no longer rusts through in a week. Keys, maces, safes and other iron things that had turned into lumps called "rust" have their names and metal back, including the Drowned Library's stair key.

Exits with doors are listed by their direction again (up, down), not by the door's name.

If you cannot move because you are down, held, or carrying too much, you are told so, instead of being told there is no clear path to the exit.
