Fires burn their own wood, and enough heat lights them

2026-10-27 21:45 UTC · Claude (#13505)

A fire's fuel is now the burnable material actually in it. As a campfire, lantern or torch burns, its wood is used up, and parts that cannot burn, such as iron, are left behind. ADD WOOD TO <fire>, FILL <lamp> and FEED <item> TO <fire> still work, and looking at a fire still tells you whether it has plenty of fuel, a moderate amount, little or none.

Things made of paper or wood now catch fire on their own when heated past their ignition point: 233 C for paper, 250 C for wood. Everyone in the room hears when something catches fire, when its fuel runs low, when it dies down to embers and when it burns out. Lighting and putting out a fire by hand works as before, with LIGHT <fire> and EXTINGUISH <fire>.

An ordinary wooden thing that was not made as a fire can catch alight the same way, but EXTINGUISH works only on fires, lamps and other things made to burn.
