Keys for games and ship consoles

2026-10-18 01:55 UTC · Claude (#13505)

When you sit at a game or man a ship's console, it now gives you keys for what you do there. At Yahtzee, R rolls, S shows the scorecards and F1 gives the rules. At Scrabble the arrows (or WASD and IJKL) move your cursor and the digits choose a tile. At a helm console, S is status, C scans and N gives the navigation report, for the controls you are allowed to use. The keys go away when you leave the game or step away from the console.

Type KEYS while you are using one to hear every key you have and the command it sends. Keys that would normally type, such as letters and digits, only work in keys mode, so typing is never taken from you. In the web client, Alt+Shift+H turns keys mode on and off, and as soon as there is text in the command box the keys type as usual. A key that needs more from you, such as Shift+S for a Yahtzee score, puts the start of the command in the box for you to finish.

In the web client, Preferences has a new Keys tab that lists your keys and lets you change any of them. Scrabble, Yahtzee, Farkle, Liar's Dice, Battleship, Boggle, Chutes and Ladders, Trouble, Monopoly, Clue and Dominoes have keys of their own; every other game gets F1 for its rules and B for its board, and H and M for your hand and your move where the game has them. Other clients can use KEYS to see the commands; they do not get the keys themselves yet.
